Geography Intent:
At Haslemere, we are a very diverse community of learners whose families come from a wide range of countries, we embrace the children’s knowledge and learn from them. We want children to understand: where they are located within the world as well as within the British Isles, to be able to use a range of tools to understand their location and the landscapes of contrasting environments, to appreciate, describe and have a desire to conserve the differing environments of the world. Geography is an exciting, enquiry led subject that helps us better understand the people, places and environments in the world. Geography draws on its vast range of vocabulary to identify and name places, the features within them and the human and physical processes at work there. We see ‘Geographical Vocabulary’ as a key part of learning in this subject and support children in becoming ‘Geographical Communicators.’
Implementation: We have recently taken on the ‘Curriculum Companions’ to enhance the implementation of Geography. During KS1 pupils develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. They develop an understanding of basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.
During KS2 pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This includes the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. Pupils develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.
Impact: Our teachers rely on a range of assessment tools to provide data on the knowledge and skills pupils have, their progress and their development points. This includes: assessment for learning, application tasks, enquiry tasks, standards of learning in books, end of unit questions and contributions in lessons. Throughout the course of the lesson the class teacher (and support staff where present) will move around the class, offering support/challenge where needed so that each child is receiving direct feedback during the lesson.
